About
This blog catalogs my journey in building a small business while juggling a day job. I’ve set a date of March 15, 2010 as the day I quit my “career”. My business is an online business selling widgets. It’s not really important what they are, since this blog isn’t about the secrets of making that specific business work. It’s about the everyday issues facing someone pursuing a dream while keeping a paycheck.
My Father also has a bricks and mortar retail store selling a different kind of widget and I’ve gained an interesting perspective in watching him do that for the last 7 years.
My career has involved accounting, project management, and Six Sigma Black Belt training. If you don’t know what that is, consider yourself lucky. I’ve worked in a corporate environment for 33 years and have dreamed everyday about owning my own business for 32 years. The risk of not having a paycheck has always held me back.
About 3 years ago I decided it was ridiculous to spend 30 years doing something that you really, really don’t like, even if you are really, really good at it. I’ll try to chronicle in this blog some of the things I did to identify what I wanted to be when I grew up and how I got my business started. I’m still working on some of it and will probably never really figure it all out, but at least I have something work related that I get excited about now.
